What We Learned At The Pujols Golf Outing

Written by athooks on .

Albert Pujols returned to St. Louis yesterday.

He held a golf tournament to support the Pujols Family Foundation. And since he didn't abandon his charity in St. Louis (they must have been giving him the proper "respect") we're not here to bag on AP today.

But what did we learn?

Holliday
Matt Holliday wears polo shirts with his name embroidered on them.

Strong move, Matt. We like it.

You can view the full slideshow (LINK HERE) for more randomness. Like Lance Lynn with a Rally Squirrel head cover or two white guys making very white guy high fives. Hell, I think they even let Shane Robinson caddy.

The Pusification Of The Cardinals

Written by athooks on .

I feel like pretty much every Monday I could sit here and write a post about a loss over the weekend that we’re going to remember as the point of the 2012 season where the Cardinals finally broke, then collapsed. PFcation

A 19 inning debacle that featured an unprecedented 0-15 from Matt Holliday and David Freese seems like a loss that is more likely to endure than some of the others we've already forgotten.

Then again, there still are 40+ games remaining and I’m not putting anything past this team.

But we’re not here to talk about gut shot losses, though.

We’re here to talk about the PUSIFICATION of the Cardinals.

10 months ago, we cautioned that the retirement of Tony LaRussa, while heartening to some, was going to be a bigger detriment to the Cardinals as an organization than the loss of Albert Pujols. You simply don’t fake your way into the top 3 managerial wins of a game in its third century of play. TLR was the ultimate grinder and yesterday’s loss would have ate him up for weeks.

What say you, though, Mike Matheny?

"The guys played hard," Matheny said. "They did. They fought. I'm proud of how they went about it. I'd really like to have walked out of there with a win, but I liked the way they played the game."

You can read more of Mike’s quotes over at Bernie’s column for STLToday.com, but the above one I listed, I assure you, actually did happen.

What exactly did you like about it, Mike? That it wasn’t a one run game, as was threatened, pushing that astonishing 12-21 mark deeper into the abyss? That the Cardinals had a chance to tie Pittsburgh for the Wild Card, but lost a winnable series at home? That everyone got to enjoy an extra three hours of being outside on a beautiful Sunday?

Mike was proud of that loss. Orange slices and juice boxes for everyone!!!

Let me ask you how… did the phrase “proud” ever come out of LaRussa’s mouth after wasting TWO quality starts in the same game? Or do you think he was stewing post-loss? Whatever your feelings on LaRussa, at least you knew he was pissed after coughing up a series. Looks like Matheny is taking a page from the Steve Spagnuolo playbook and choosing to stay positive.

Oy.

These are professionals. They get paid (well) to play baseball. This is their J-O-B. And when you or I go into work and suck hard, do our bosses praise us? Nope. They don’t. They tell us what needs to be said and if we don’t improve, then we get shipped out.

The Cardinals play in a weak league with multiple All-Stars. They should be in the playoffs. And if they aren’t, then that’s a failure.

It’s time to quit sugarcoating the situation, Mike. It’s time to hold people accountable. End the coddling.

Hall, Oats and The Friday Links

Written by athooks on .

A couple Halloween's ago Coach Mac and I did a whole Hall & Oates deal. I'm not really much a Hall, but he's a ringer for Oates.

I always thought that Daryl Hall is one of the iconic white guys who you thought was black until you saw him, but it wasn't until I was fully immersed in the H&O experience that I became a real sap for their entire catalogue.

So when Fresh WC goes ahead and puts this whole election season in perspetive AND includes Hall & Oates? Well, we're going to throw it up and call it a post. (Nevermind the misspelling. The E is silent anyway)

Enjoy.

And feel free to print this sucker and put it on your door/car/other.

That's it. That's the week. We got through that Olympic withdrawal period OK and while we weren't looking, the Cardinals got right up in that Wild Card race. Anyone else rooting for a one game playoff in Busch Stadium to start off the postseason? It's like a insta game 7. Have a big weekend, friends.

Chris Trew Came... To Busch Stadium

We have a little "Contact" button on the top of our page. Trew

95% of the time we get spam through it.

Not even good spam either (like 'Your PayPal Account Is Frozen) where you have to pause a beat before trashing it. It's usually something with the subject line of 'XCcdcscCSDSCFde' and nothing in the body of the e-mail.

At least you know what the scam is with the wire transfer e-mail from Uganda, but this? It's just nonsense. I don't even know what they need from me to clean out my bank account.

3% of the time it's somebody wanting to know when a prize they won will arrive.

1% of the time it's a blistering critique on the site, our moral fiber and/or an invitation to suck someone's privates.

But every now and again, we get something interesting.

Chris Trew is a comedian and on tour now. He's visiting ballparks when he's in a town with a MLB team. And he was at Busch Stadium recently. He sent us the blog post about it: LINK HERE

And since we're running on fumes until the final month of the season, we're just going to drop it here and hope that suffices for a post.

Follow Chris on Twitter: @ChrisTrew and check out his blog/tour/whatever if you want.

Or not.

We're just typing until it looks like enough words are on this post.

Addison Street is My Everest

You guys, I'm in a wedding coming up soon. And like anyone that holds that exceptional honor and responsibility, I know that there are things that must be done and errands that must be run.

(I did not mean to rhyme just there. And the fact that I did makes me hate myself.)

So, because of the really fun bachelorette party that I'm attending this weekend (KELLY NO PEEKING!!!), I made the mistake of going out in public tonight.

AREN'T THE CUBS DEAD YET?????

For the love of Yadier Molina, I still do not understand what is so hard about parking in an alley.  You just DRIVE IN. There are people there with signs telling you where to go. They are waving their hands around in the air like they are asking to be RESCUED BY MARTIANS, yet there is Mr. McShithead and all of his friends who seem completely bewildered by something so simple that I'm not sure they even teach it in driver's ed anymore.

I NEED TO GO BUY WOMEN'S UNDERTHINGS!!!!! MOVE ALONG, DUMMIES!!!

I don't have time for Mr. McShithead and his friends to meander to the ballpark for a seemingly meaningless game. MY TIME IS PRECIOUS!!!  Don't they know that it will take me an hour and a half to pick out the perfectly slutty outfit for my friend? And I that I still have to catch up on episodes of The Colbert Report???

In any event, I made it home without actually MURDERING anyone. Which is no small feat, all things considered. I should probably be able to sleep tonight, assuming I don't have that reaccuring dream about Jon Hamm driving me towards the Grand Canyon in a Humvee. In his his defense, he always saves me.  I don't know why you have to be so judgmental about it.

WE ARE IN LOVE.

Closing Ceremony Leads Monday Ramblin's...

Written by athooks on .

The Beatles. The Who. David Bowie. Pink Floyd. Elton John. The Rolling Stones. Led Zepplin. The Kinks. Radiohead. Coldplay. And we get two songs from One Direction? Boo. Double boo. I think, at least as music fans, we could have had reason for one of the best concerts of all time. Instead? Spice Girls, Jessie J and Tinie Tempah were the focal points? Just what the fuck happened England?... OneDirection

The Colby Rasmus stink just won't leave the Cardinals. Marc Rzepczynski came in, walked two guys and left the ballgame yesterday. Mitchell Boggs got tagged for a 3 run shot and a game in the bank got chalked as a loss. I'm sure there have been worse L's in 2012, but when you get to the 50 game and under mark, those ones stick with you. Scrabble's ERA is pushing 5 now. Time to man up...

Of course Andrew Luck's first NFL pass is a 63 year TD against the Rams. This franchise has a way about them, don't they? But it's only a pre-season game Hooksie, don't blow this out of proportion! The Colts were 2-14 last year too, friends. Getting beat by 35 is never good. Doesn't matter when...

Someone please let the Cardinals know that it IS an option to win in extra innings. Not quite sure if they know this or not...

I think we need to all agree that whatever happens on TV the rest of the year, that the monkey from Animal Practice needs to get a Best Supporting Actor Emmy...

Lance Lynn is giving up 1433 runs every first inning for like the last month worth of starts. He needs to stop that and start giving us far less runs so his teammates don't have to start from so far behind...

Anthony Davis went to Kentucky, won a national championship, every single player of the year award, got drafted #1 overall in the NBA and went to London to get a gold medal for Team USA. I'm not saying you should put some future bets on the Hornets winning a championship, but everything is coming up roses for The Brow these past 2 years...

The 5 Year Anniversary Of "Rick The Stick"

Written by athooks on .

Five years and 1 day ago, Rick Ankiel became a legend.

Our friends over at Fan IQ reminded us that it's already been half a decade since Rick The Stick put back on the Cardinals uniform after a 3 year exile in the minor leagues to "become a hitter".

Please note: from 2001 to August 9 2007, Rick Ankiel had exactly 1 official at bat in the Major Leagues. One. Since? Nearly 1600 at bats and a second act that becomes more unbelievable the further we get away from it.

Dude was Rookie of the Year in 2000. As a pitcher. Now he was back. As a bad ass center fielder. He would have so ruined Twitter.

A mere 2 weeks after the curtain went up on this second act he hit the first of many home runs:

So good.

That was one of the more underrated moments in Cardinal history. Didn't particularly mean much for the season or the game even, but for everyone, present company included, that wrote him off?

Redemption never tasted so sweet.

He's been away from the Cardinals for several years now, but Cards Diaspora Rick Ankiel will always have a special place with Cards Diaspora. (Ed. Note: Yes, Cards Diaspora will always have a special place with Cards Diaspora)

That's it. That's the week. We gave away some keychains. Got a trade of Tyler Greene. Heard from Trumbsy. I'd say we've earned a couple days off.

Tyler Greene: TRADED

Written by athooks on .

The Tyler Greene era has ended with a thudTraded

A night removed from a spot start that lit the fuse on a 15-0 beatdown from the Giants, the Cardinals have traded Greene to Houston for a player to be named later and a bag of money.

Makes sense, since Houston GM Jeff Luhnow was in charge of the Cardinals minor league system when Greene was drafted.

Some of his best hits on The CD:

The move had to be made. Greene was becoming too big of a distraction to contribute in St. Louis.

We wish him the best.

Being a Great Influence is Great

Written by Trumbsy on .

Man, oh man, was this past weekend awesome, or what?  Can you guys believe those crazy Redbirds were able to just go out and DOMINATE the Brewers like that? 143-1

WHO KNEW THEY HAD IT IN THEM???  (Answer:  EVERYONE.)

Anyhow, completing a sweep is always fantastic, but this weekend was particularly special to me.  And it’s because my trips to St. Louis have always been an adult only affair.

(NO BABIES ALLOWED EXCEPT FOR GROWN ONES DAD I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU I PROMISE!!!)

They were boozy, profanity laden excursions that encouraged supreme selfishness and an overwhelming sense of entitlement.  Those games were about ME, dammit!  And the delusional part of my brain always seemed to think the Cardinals should KNOW that and therefore try harder to win those games.  It’s completely insane, I realize, but I suffer from ridiculous illusions of grandeur.

In any case, this trip proved to be much different, as this ended up being the year we finally brought my nephew along for the ride.  As a 10 year old, he was finally deemed old enough to enjoy the experience of gorging on baseball and our related neuroses for three straight days.  So he and his best friend joined our ever expanding traveling pack of Iowa bred Cardinal fans to make this our first St. Louis trip that involved children’s museums and Build-a-Bears.

And let me tell you something, it CHANGED me.

I watched all three of those games with a dramatically different mindset.  It was no longer about wanting the Cardinals to win for me.  It was about PLEADING with them to win for my nephew.

(Pleading so hard, in fact, that I think I gave myself a hernia.)

I wanted lots of home runs and exciting plays at home and dramatic double plays.  I wanted him to have the experience we've all had at some point in our lives that cemented and defined our fandom.  I mean, I VIVIDLY remember the day that my personal investment in Cardinals baseball went from passing interest to borderline obsession.  It happened over the course of a single half inning and by the end of it, I was hooked. That was A HUNDRED YEARS ago, but I’ll never forget that game or the feeling I had.   It’s unshakeable.

So, I spent a large amount of time just staring at these two 10 year old kids like a total creep just WAITING for them to realize how absolutely freakin’ AWESOME it all was.  I was irrationally concerned with them enjoying the absolute SHIT out of those games.

Now don’t get me wrong, I was just as personally invested in the outcome as I've ever been.  But somehow these wins seemed to mean more knowing that we were creating a whole new generation of fans as a result.  Each night that we got to watch the victory fireworks over Busch Stadium was another affirmation for these two boys just how great it is to care deeply not just about any team, but THIS team.

And while I can’t say for sure that this was the weekend that hooked them for good, we definitely gave it our all.  We played the Cap Dance game on the jumbotron.  We high fived and fist bumped until our hands were sore.  We JAMMED THE F@$# out to Allen Craig’s at bat song.  We were ALL IN.

Ultimately, this series brought out the kinder, gentler fan in me.  I swore less.  I listened more. And instead of going out partying until the wee hours after the games, I went back to the hotel and got my ass handed to me in UNO and Skip-Bo.  (While sweet, these kids are RUTHLESS!!!) I don’t know if it’s permanent, but I feel like I became a little less of an asshole over the weekend.

IT’S LIKE I DON’T EVEN KNOW MYSELF ANYMORE!!!

In any case, it made me realize that THIS is what sports are all about.  It’s not about me.  It’s NEVER been about me.  It’s about the bond between all of us fans who are in it together.  My Dad influenced my love for Cardinals baseball.  And now my nephew and his best pal have joined the pantheon.  We have done our part to insure that the next generation isn't overrun by delusional Cubs fans.  And for that, YOU ARE WELCOME.

PS:  I have to mention that my nephew’s best friend looks eerily like a young Kyle Lohse.  We, of course, teased him about this all weekend with DELIGHT.  He hated this comparison until Sunday.
